Technical Information

As a growing nursery Botanica has produced a superb and ever expanding collection of Trees, Shrubs, Climbers, Herbaceous Perennials, Grasses Ferns, Bamboos and Conifers, Including many rare and not commonly available for sale plants. This enviable selection is drawn from our own Botanic collection and a lifetime collecting from other Botanic and Nursery sources.

British Grown Plants

All of our plants are British grown collected from British cuttings or seeds. This are more suited to our British climate, establishing and growing with greater success than continental imports and will flower and fruit at the right time according to our seasons, benefiting our wildlife and ecology. We do not import stock from the continent, as these plants can often be of poor quality and have difficulty coping with the British weather.

British Provenance Plants

All of Botanica’s native plants originate in this country from seeds and cuttings of native and naturally grown British stock. We are pledged to adhere to the Flora Locale Code of Conduct for the supply of Native and Wild plants and our plant origin and source of supply is based on the Forestry Commissions Regional Provenance Programme.

A certificate of provenance is available for any of our native plants upon request.

Bare Root Plants/Transplanted Stock

We grow quality bare root trees and plants by traditional nursery methods in the soil as nature intended, by skilled people, expert in their art.

Our bare root stock is regularly lifted during their early years. This helps produce a fibrous root system which enables our bare root plants and trees to establish successfully and growing vigorously when planted by you.

100% Peat Free Compost

Originating from organic material and developed by us over the last 10 years our 100% Peat Free Compost provides a superb growing medium for any plant to thrive in.

We use special buffering agents to reduce the high nutrient status of the original organic material. Carefully blending ingredients to reduce the PH to an optimal point. We then add organic slow release fertilizers to provide balanced nutrients and include Magnesium Sulphate and Iron Sulphate to ensure sufficient levels are available for a wide range of subjects.

Environmental

The results of our special blend compost can be seen by the high quality of our pot grown plants.

Continental Imports

Q: When is an English oak not an English oak?
A: When the acorn has been collected in Poland or Hungary, grown in Holland or Belgium then sold in England as Quercus robur ‘TheEnglish Oak’

Although the differences may seem minor Continental ‘native’ plants and trees flower and fruit at different times to our seasons. This prevents our wildlife having food at crucial times such as when rearing young. Continental imports also carry in diseases and pests which our British native plant sand ecology may not be able to cope with. In particular many continental bare root plants are lifted at the beginning of the season and stored in warehouses until they are sold in bulk to suppliers in Britain.

We are a growing nursery, we do not import plants, so we can guarantee superior quality stock that will cope with the vagaries of the British climate, and benefit our wildlife, ecology and landscape.
