Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa)

 

Sweet Chestnut. This familiar tree was probably brought to Britain with the Romans who used the branches as support for their vines.

Sweet Chestnuts make large imposing trees with fascinating spiral fluted bark and of course, sweet chestnuts for the open fire.

A Promising hybrid of C. crenata and C. sativa found in the Ardèche region of France variety late-ripening, large sweet nuts very early in life on trees as young as 2 yrs.

This select form has superb spires of cream coloured flowers in July, followed by heavy crops of large nuts even on young plants. Single large nut per cluster.
