Beautiful in summer when the spikes of mauve and white flowers erupt from the deeply cut bright green leaves.  
Acanthus spinsous A good plant for a position in full sun, an imposing plant of strong outline, big jagged leaves and the usual Acanthus flowers from May through to June, a little earlier than A. mollis.

An upright perennial with a filigree of silvery leaves. It bears large flat heads of small golden flowers.

This well known variety is easy to grow and freely produces the lovely blue flowers in big 'pom-pom' like heads.  
Agastache foeniculum Aromatic nettle like leaves and dusky purple flowers on tall stems. A good plant for tough dryish places and space where it will seed itself quite happily  
Ajuga reptans Atropurpurea A reliable little grouncovering plant that is adaptable to many situations that quickly makes a weed proof mat. Purple foliage and striking blue flowers over a long period of early summer.  
Ajuga reptans Catlins Giant All the qualities of the above but larger leaves, slightly less flowers perhaps too.  
Ajuga reptans Variegata A reall y pretty plant this, nicely variegated foliage and not so rampant as its cousins.

Lady's Mantle, very easy to grow, suitable to most situations, attractively shaped light green leaves that have a downy hair cover that captures raindrops like jewels, feathery green yellow flowers all summer.  
Allium Christophii Big spherical flower heads on short stems, always attracts attention. Very popular in recent years by designers and the like.  
Allium karataviense Makes large broad flat leaves with a hint of purple, followed by good sized brown red flower heads on shortish stalks  
Anemone hupehensis September Charm A branching perennial with masses of delightful cup-shaped pink flowers in late summer and deeply divided dark green foliage.  
Anemone hybrida Robustissima A handsome and vigorous perennial with soft pink flowers in late summer and large divided grey-green leaves.  
Anthemis E C Buxton Quite the best for the traditional English Herbaceous border, a continuous display of soft yellow daisy like flowers  
Anthriscus sylvestris Ravenswing Lovely purple ferny 'Cow Parsley' foliage with pink flowers. Avoid those plants grown from seed where the flowers can be a rather washed out pink  
Aquilegia Nora Barlow Plum red multi petalled flowers tipped with white very distinctive and without the usual backward facing 'spurs'  
Aquilegia vulgaris Chantry Blue A name we gave to this lovely deep blue flowered form  
Armeria maritima Splendens A lovely form of 'Thrift' rose-pink small pom pom flowerheads over an long period reliable performer prefering good drainage  
Artemesia arbrotanum Lads Love, Southernwood, several names for this plant who's smell always makes people smile,evokes memories of childhoods etc, a must for every garden and so easy to grow in a free draining soil.  
Artemesia ludoviciana Valerie Finnis A good plant for a sunny border with its pretty divided silver foliage.  
Artemesia pontica Roman Wormwood' a plant for the wilder, sunnier part of the garden, rather rampagious but nonrtheless attractive with its constant display of feathery sage green foliage  
Arum italicum Pictum Very effective winter foliage showing its well known marbled leaves to good effect together with those bright red berries  
Asplenium scolopendrium Also called Phyllitis scolopendrium or The Harts Tongue Fern, lovely evergreen fronds of rich mid-green always look neat and tidy. It is easy to grow and contrasts so well with daintier foliaged subjects.  
Asplenium trichomanes The Maidenhair Spleenwort. Delightful delicate light green foliage emphasised by the dark black/brown central spine and leaf petioles. A British native  
Asphodeline Liburnica Grass like foliage from which emerge at height of summer slender spires of pale yellow flowers  
Aster novi-belgii Audrey A typical Michaelmas Daisy in leaf but its flowers are a rather special shade of blue  
Aster novi-belgii Little Pink Beauty A lovely autumn flowering 'Aster' with quite good shade of pink flowers  
Astilbe arendsii Fanal A leafy perennial bearing massive feathery plumes of crimson red flowers in summer. The strong stems support the flowers into winter, and add a charm of their own when covered in frost.  
Astilbe arendsii White Gloria A sturdy perennial with dense erect spikes of feathery white flowers in summer. Good winter effect if the finished flowers are left on the plant.  
Astrantia major Rosea These fully hardy perennials form clumps of upright stems, branching near the top. It has deep pink petal-like bracteoles surrounding a dense umbel of small greenish flowers. Easily grown in sun or shade, given good drainage.  
Astrantia major Rubra A lovely old cottage garden favourite shaggy flower heads with tones of dusky pink and attractive small clump forming habit, prefers moisture retentive soil in sun or shade
